What We Are About
This web site is dedicated to those who served in, supported and helped to maintain the missile sites of the 549th Strategic Missile Squadron. This Air Force unit was on 24-7-365 active duty from 1961 until 1965. The 549th SMS was in charge of three SM-65 Atlas D missile bases deployed in locations around Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska. Each site location contained three missile launcher facilities with a single control center. This gave each Atlas D Squadron a total of nine missiles. These bases were a major nuclear deterent during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This site is meant to be a source of information related to the 549th SMS and is intended as a tribute to the hard work and sacrifices that were made in successfully carrying out a very difficult mission.
